Get into the Spirit: Samsung’s fan hub for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations
During the Orange Africa Cup of Nations Gabon–Equatorial Guinea 2012, getintothespirit.com was the address Samsung gave football fans across Africa: live scores, match highlights, a fan gallery, competitions and a mobile version of the site. The campaign ran under the line “Show your spirit with Samsung”. This site documents what the campaign was, what happened at the tournament and how Samsung’s football sponsorship in Africa developed.

What the campaign consisted of
Samsung was an official sponsor of the Africa Cup of Nations from 2008 and used the 2012 edition for its largest fan programme on the continent up to then. According to Samsung’s own announcement of 26 January 2012, the campaign had five parts: the Samsung Football Fest in Libreville, T-shirt giveaways in the stadiums of Malabo and Libreville, pop-up stadiums in shopping malls in Ghana, Senegal and Angola, the Samsung Fair Play Award, and the online and mobile hub at getintothespirit.com. The Football Fest alone drew more than 30,000 visitors according to Samsung’s Korean newsroom.

Why the domain matters today
Campaign websites usually disappear when the campaign ends, while the press releases and news articles that pointed to them stay online. That is the case here: Samsung’s global newsroom and several news sites still reference www.getintothespirit.com in their 2012 coverage. This site exists so that those references lead to an explanation of what the campaign was rather than to an empty page. It is not run by Samsung and does not claim to be; see About this site.
